Established in 1920 and nestled in the heart of Brockton,
Massachusetts, Superior Baking Company Inc. has
been delighting distributors, food service companies, and
restaurants with quality bread products for over a century.
Specializing in custom bread items, Italian bread, bulkie rolls,
crusty rolls, and a diverse range of bakery staples, Superior Baking
has maintained its tradition of quality while navigating the
evolving demands of the industry.
When Michael Matook [photo], treasurer of Superior Baking Company, sought ways to modernize and strengthen the family-owned bakery, he turned to the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center. Michael recently completed the SBA’s highly acclaimed THRIVE program, designed to bolster small businesses through rigorous training in strategic planning, operational improvements, and robust fiscal management practices. With guidance from Massachusetts SBDC advisors, Superior Baking implemented critical business enhancements aimed at securing long-term viability, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth for future generations.
Like many businesses, Superior Baking Company faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the assistance of the Massachusetts SBDC team, the company successfully navigated the complexities of federal assistance programs, securing critical Economic Injury Disaster Loan funds and Paycheck Protection Program forgivable loans. This vital financial support allowed the bakery to retain staff, maintain operations, and position itself strategically for post-pandemic recovery.
Reflecting on his experience with the Massachusetts SBDC, Michael emphasized:
"The Massachusetts SBDC helped us focus on what our needs, true goals, and areas of concentration should be. Running a business without goals and direction is a recipe for failure.
